Description
Syria Intervenes to Defuse Hariri-Hizbullah Tension Despite its troop withdrawal from Lebanon more than five years ago, Syria is proving that it can still influence internal Lebanese politics in one way or another by exerting pressure on rival factions. This was best manifested recently when Syria intervened to defuse mounting political and sectarian tensions between Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri and the powerful militant Shiite Hizbullah group that threatened to plunge the country into a new bout of sectarian violence. The tensions followed last month's bloody clashes that pitted Hizbullah gunmen against supporters of the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects, a Sunni fundamentalist party, also known as Al-Ahbash. Three people were killed in the street fighting that rocked the West Beirut neighborhood of Burj Abi Haidar and nearby areas on August 24 and revived fears of similar sectarian violence that engulfed Beirut and other areas in May 2008. The clashes have since sparked calls, mainly by Hariri's parliamentary Future Movement bloc MPs and their Christian allies, for declaring Beirut a weapons-free city. However, such calls have been condemned by Hizbullah and its allies in the March 8 alliance, arguing that they aim to target Hizbullah's arms.
